since the unit got Coke poured on it, my IBM Thinkpad T20's display
seems broken. I don't know if it's the LCD itself or some controller
that was harmed. What I really need to know is, do i have a fair chance
to get that display working again?

Maybe. Did the Coke go on the LCD itself?

You should (a) remove ALL POWER SOURCES, and (b) wash the electronics
ASAP. Colas are highly corrosive, especially when electrically
stimulated (so to speak) - not to mention the nasty sticky residue they
leave. I would disassemble the unit completely and wash the electronics
(not the HDD or LCD, but do wash the mainboard and inverter) in
distilled water, blow off as much water as possible with compressed
air, and leave to dry in a warm place.
