my router (lynksys wireless g) with it when wifi switch turned on.. also ive
tried to use a Linksys wireless G network card but it still does not connect
when software installed. am i missing something or could the laptop be

You need to use the diagnostics in the router.  Enter (or
whatever address your router uses) into a browser to access the router

Once there, disable anything other than limiting transmission to
802.11g; this will enable the onboard 802.11b card to communicate.

Next reboot the router, then your notebook.  Go back to the router
diagnostics and check DHCP Client Table.  See if your notebook wireless
NIC is listed. If not, disable WEP or WPA security in the router,
restart the notebook, and see if the notebook is listed in the DHCP
Client Table.

This is a start.  Once you understand how to control the router, then
you can begin to understand how to connect a new device to the router.
