I recently purchased a used (ca. 1999-2000) Sony Vaio laptop, model
PCG-9211. The laptop was running XP when I got it but I installed
Win98 SE because that was the original OS according to the Microsoft
label on the keyboard. 98 installed without too much problem but I
can't seem to get the right video card driver installed; the best
resolution I can get is 16 colors, 640 X 480. When I went to Sony's
website, it turns out that the PCG-9211 is really the PCG-F580 (????)
and the video card on the spec sheet for this model is the NeoMagic
MagicMedia 256 XL+. The driver for the NeoMagic 256 XL+ seems to have
installed OK but I get absolutely no improvement on the resolution.

Anybody know anything about this particular laptop, NeoMagic, or how I
might go about getting a better resolution?

Go to the Display control panel, or right-click the desktop/properties,
find the advanced properties with the two monitor icons, slide the
pointer to a higher resolution.

Hey jamc I found this on driversguide website . The file is
vftprw9x.exe. Create a driversguide account or google search this
then uninstall the existing video driver, and install this one. Hope
helps you.
