Sony VAIO GRX550

Someone gave me a Sony GRX550.  It all works except the LCD screen.  The
screen lights (tube works) but does not display.  The display works from the
VGA port OK though, so I can see what is going on with an external screen.
It had no driver disks with it and I have some on order, but I have
downloaded the drivers from Sony.  I have taken the top off and gotten to
the video connector and it seems plugged in, and then I opened the LCD panel
and the connector is plugged in there.  I did notice that there is a
"ground" wire that is connected to nothing on one end and the panel on the
other.  Any ideas if this is the problem?  Then anyone know where the other
end is supposed to go?

If it is not likely to be the problem, then has anyone had any experience
with this symptom and it's usual solutions?  (By the way, I have used the
function key to try to switch from external monitor to the LCD, no luck.)

Thanks, Rich

There is a ground wire on some Vaio notebooks that is connected to the
frame on the left hand side where the display wire bundle enters the
display.  It is a black wire with a spade on the end, screwed to the
frame. It is maybe an 18 gauge whereas the balance of the wires are
something like 22-24 gauge.  OTOH, the display might just be damaged.
