Many of Sharp's notebook's have a feature called DirectHD - when it's
turned off and plugged into another computer (typically a desktop) the
notebook will show up as an extrernal hard drive.

Does anyone know of a way to make another manufacturer's machine behave

Apple iBooks and PowerBooks (and some desktops, e.g. Mac Mini) have
Target Disk Mode, which is the same sort of thing.
