Single-spindle laptops?

Have tiny single-spindle machines fallen out of favor?

A few years ago we had products like the PowerBook 2300, Compaq Armada
M300 and ThinkPad 240X (and later the X series from IBM).

All the subnotebooks I see these days are really "thin and lights" with
the optical drive integrated, which makes them thicker and heavier than
they would otherwise be.

I'm looking for something in the 10-12" screen range (preferably 4:3),
XGA or better, with no internal optical drive; I never need one on the
road. A magnesium body is desirable.
