I didn't realise laptop harddrives had jumpers. I just checked now
anyway but there doesn't seem to be any on the HD...

Yes, they do have jumpers if it's an IDE drive (SATA drives don't have
master-slave jumpers, not even desktop 3.5" SATA drives).  An SATA drive
might have a 150/300 jumper (and, indeed, that could be an issue).

The master slave jumpers on laptop IDE drives are the extra 4 pins that
are to the side of the main 44-pins of the ide and power interface.
