Re: HP ProtectTools / Windows 7

Do you have a question? Post it now! No Registration Necessary.  Now with pictures!

I got it to work! (FINALLY)   I did a number of things, so I can't say
for sure how to do it step by step.   I went to the HP site and found my
desktop model (dc5800) in the Support & Drivers section.  From there, I
went to "Download drivers and software" and selected "Software -
Security".   I downloaded both the Java and Embedded Security programs.
I downloaded, but was not able to install, the Credentials program
because I didn't have a CD that it requested.

I then went to do the normal Control Panel program uninstalls in the
order specified in the earlier post.   If, while unintalling
ProtectTools, it says you need to close ProtectTools, do a CNTL-ALT-DEL,
click on the PROCESSES tab, and end the ProtectTools processes.   If it
doesn't show up in the list of running processes, fire it up from your
systray, then do the CNTL-ALT-DEL again.    I'm not sure if this helped
or not, but I also stopped a SERVICE called hpqwmiex.   To do this,
CNTL-ALT-DEL and click on the SERVICES tab.

This may not have been the most effective process, but I finally got it
to work.  I hope this saves you a couple of hours.   The upgrade seems
to be working fine (still running).
