On the models that have solid state drives (SSD) instead of "real" hard
drive .... is the SSD a SATA form factor such that it can actually be

Well the EeePC 700 and 900 models use PATA PCI-e. That is those that
doesn't have the SSD soldered on the motherboard. Most of the models do.
And no, a 2.5" drive won't even physically fit in that spot.
