As others have mentioned, an UPS will provide power if the AC goes even
without a laptop battery. Does that help? I also have my alarm clock,
cordless phone, and a small lamp plugged into my UPS as well.

And the biggest cause of short life for Li-Ion batteries which we
learned from heavy use of RC aircraft, is charging hot batteries really
shorten their life a lot (you can ruin one in a matter of days). Thus if
you use it on batteries let's say and then put it on AC, don't charge
the battery for a good 10 to 15 minutes to allow it to cool down. How do
you do that? Well the best way is to remove the battery of course.

If you had a child/pet/buddy/etc. walk past you and trip on the AC cord,
you won't lose any data if you have the battery installed.

IE: Protection from data loss due to power loss

of course when the computer hits the floor from tripping on the cord you
might lose more than just data
