About 5 digits/characters on the Product Key on the bottom of my HP dv9500
are unreadable. I know there are "key finder" software out there but the key
they find does not match the one on the bottom of the laptop. Should I have
to activate again, can I use the one that was found in the registry by the
"key finder" utility? Any suggestions?

Yes. Download keyfinder-changer utility from Microsoft. It will pull
the COA being used by any Microsoft products on the computer.
According to Microsoft, this number is valid for recovery from
partition; but, if recovery is from a recovery disk then you MUST have
the COA from the sticker as this will be different from the factory
installation. If the COA sticker becomes illegible, the OEM MUST
provide a replacement sticker on request.

All of that is per a Microsoft Knowledge Base article, you can search
MS Help for it; I don't have the article number to hand.

Right now, a friend of mine is fighting with Toshiba because they are
refusing to comply with this part of Microsoft's license agreement.
