Old CTX is a POS

It's my old software testing computer, running W98SE.

Just noticed the other day when I went to add a program, the internal CD-R
wasn't being found. :\

It shows as a secondary master in the bios, has the newest drivers loaded,
(tried to reload drivers and it said newer versions already in place).
Unplugged and reseated it, but can't make it be found.
It's a torisan (sanyo) 24X IIRC.
I do have a backpack external drive that I can hook up if I need, and it
shows as being happy in device manager, but the interal one ain't anywhere
to be found.
Any fresh ideas I'm missing here?

Boot to Safe Mode.  Remove the drive from Device Manager.  While in Safe
Mode/Device Manager, look through all entries and if there are any
"phantom" devices, i.e., multiple entries of any device, remove all of
them.  Reboot and the devices will be reinstalled.  This should be a
standard practice, just like defragging, with Win9x to compensate for
the strange behavior of the hardware manager and is the first step for
resolving hardware problems.  If this does not work, then the drive has
likely failed. IMO.
