I am thinking about buying a Acer Aspire 3613WLCi Notebook for my
grandson who is a freshmsn at Duke University.  I would appreciate some
opinions on this laptop and also if you think it will be adequate for
his needs.  Thanks

I would believe it would it will be more then adequate for standard ool
needs (Windows XP, MS Office [word processing, spread sheets, etc...],
email, web surfing, etc...).  The batter life rated at 3.5 hours, which is
pretty good.

Also give your grandson one of those USB Flash/Jump drives.  They are
cheap & very useful when you want to take your files with you, and work
another computer on campus.  You can get an 256MB version of USB
flash/jump drives for about 25 bucks.  Even though I have a laptop, I
carry my files on my flash drive, and use it when I don't laptop handy.

Hope this helps...

Re: New Laptop

I noticed that it's 6.1 lbs. That's really not bad at all as far as
weight goes but make sure your grandson is ok with carrying the laptop
with the AC adapter around. If he thinks it is a pain to carry a laptop
around then it's useless to him.

As for features, it is probably more than adequate for college needs.
To save some money, you may want to look at some great freeware like
OpenOffice as an alternative to Microsoft office.

Re: New Laptop

I think that your concern is misplaced.  The laptop will almost
certainly be fine (the specs for almost any new laptop will meet the
needs of almost any general-purpose user).  The bigger conern I would
have is Acer, which is one of a number of firms (Sony is another) about
which users with problems have reported significant customer support issues.
