screen went nearly black (it's possible to make out faint images only) and
stays black through reboot (bootup and splash screens are black), so it is
not a Windows loading issue. I can't find the manual, and there's no online
support. There are no labelled brightness or contrast function keys. Any
suggestions, other than buy a new laptop?

is the power supply for the lamp) has failed. The lamp is a fluorescent
tube, 2mm or 3mm in diameter and the length of one of the screen edges
(a few LCD panels have multiple lamps). The inverter is a small PCB
located in the lid. Both are replaceable, but getting the replacement
parts can be extremely difficult, even more so for a "3rd-tier" product
[Use extreme caution, the LCD inverter puts out extremely high voltages,
sometimes over 1,000 volts, that can be not only painful but even
