So, get to work and my trust old (3years) NC 8000 refused to boot.  Not a
hard drive issue, won't even get into the bios....I had a similar problem
two years ago and they swapped out the as luck would have
it, my extended warranty expired about a month ago....

Anybody have any suggestions other than taking it in for servicing?  I may
still do that unless I can find someone who has an old nc8000 they are
looking to sell.....

Look at the cost of buying a replacement system vs the cost of a new
motherboard. An indexpensive USB disk drive enclosure will give you a
simple way to retrieve all of your data from the NC 8000 disk drive and
will give you a backup drive for a new system.

Try bargaining with service and see if they'll do a warranty repair even
though your contract expired. You've already had one board fail and
might make a case that the new one should have laster longer than just
past the end date of the service contract.

Thanks for the advice.  Picked up a usb cable and was able to transfer
the information from the laptop drive to the newly purchased desktop.

Called HP and they agreed warranty the work.  Hopefully by Monday or
Tuesday we will be up and running....
