MSN Messenger update problem

Not strictly a laptop issue but wondering if anybody out there has come
across this: My Messenger client is 6.2 (under Win XP Pro) and I cannot sign
in because there is a critical upgrade to be installed, or so I am told when
it fires up.   I uninstalled Messenger from my PC, went to the MS download
site and downloaded/installed a fresh copy but I still get the same warning
when it fires up.    Reading the info on the website, I need to upgrade to
build 0205 and the one I just received from the very same website was build
0137 - hmmmm.     I tried following the "Upgrade" path instead of going for
a clean install and after waiting for the download to end, I received a
warning that the file was not verified, so I decided not to risk installing
it - now I am in Catch-22: can't use Messenger, not even the latest version
from the website, and the upgrade is flagged as untrustworthy.    Any
suggestions please, good people?

Re: MSN Messenger update problem

Yes, I have XP SP2 installed and auto-updates enabled - I revisited the
update site to be sure and the check tells me that all updates are present
and correct.   Thanks for the suggestion - still stuck!
