LCD panel problem

The LCD on my TP 600E doesn't always light up. However, if I leave it for
some time (or boot it up again) the light usually comes back. So it seems
like it needs some warming up to work. Based on that, what is the most
likely culprit? How much more or less would it cost to fix it?

I have the same problem with a Compaq Presario that contains an Athlon.  I
believe the Athlon has fried part of the motherboard because the screen
works fine in a different PC.
