My daughter has a Dell 1150 Inspirion laptop she recieved a a high
school graduation gift.  In the course of transporting it back and
forth college, the LCD disply got a nice crack in it and it is
spreading.  The casing is fine, it is just the display panel itself
that is cracked. Dell wants $600 to replace the entire cover.  It is a
fairly new machine so just junking it for another is not a option.  I
really want to repair the display.

Please advise.  I am open to any ideas, suggestions, recommendations or
whatever that woule lend me to getting this fixed.

Re: LCD Display for Inspirion 1150

You will need to open the lid and get the exact model of the LCD panel,
then find a replacement.  It won't be cheap; the cost is likely to
depend on if you get a new or used panel, but it's likely to be anywhere
from $150 to about the $600 that Dell wanted.

Next time you buy a laptop that will do a lot of traveling, consider
getting an extended warranty with "no-fault" coverage for physical
damage including screen breakage.  Usually about $200 to $300 for 3
years of coverage.

NOTE: There is some chance that your homeowner's insurance might cover
this, also, if it was bought with a credit card, some credit cards have
"warranty" coverage.
