The read speed thru the SD port is about half a megabyte/second.

the cpu is still pegged at 100% and the transfer speed is still half a
This is symptomatic of a brain-dead driver or serious misconfiguration.

FLASH cards of any type come in a variety of different architectures
depending on the size and manufacturer.  To make matters worse there are two
distinct types of FLASH memory.  Although the SD ports are designed to
operate with architectures and sizes that will become available in the
future, they (obviously) cannot be tested with them.  As a result, it often
happens that the interface either doesn't work at all or, more usually,
operates at a speed slower than the FLASH card is really capable of
operating at.

USB FLASH sticks have the interfacing built in so that it only has to comply
with the USB port requirements.  Thus, these devices will nearly always work
at full speed.
