I have a fairly new Toshiba laptop and have Zonealarm installed. I've
noticed that several times each day pinger.exe is blocked. This wants
to contact and the destination DNS is

What is this program and why does it feel the need to try to contact

Can I stop it from automatically running, and if so how?

There is a good freeware utility called "startup monitor" which is handy for
editing what auto starts. says:

pinger.exe is a task from Toshiba which regularly checks for software
updates. This program is a non-essential system process, but should not be
terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

Sorry to disagree but after doing some checking, and reading this ">
it appears that pinger.exe most probably is I quote " ... the resident
program for Toshiba updates. Periodically checks to see if there are any
software/driver upgrades for your particular computer model. If it finds
any, it posts a notification."

I am not familiar with Toshibas but you should have no problem locating
the program (may be in Control Panel) where you can customize the
desired setting.
