I am looking at buying a "gaming" laptop on a budget (< $1250) and have
narrowed my choices to the following 2 models:

Dell Inspiron 6400 ($1,117)
    - Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.00 Ghz / 4 mb L2 / 667 Mhz FSB)
    - 15.4 in wide screen XGA w/TrueLife
    - 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM @ 533 mhz
    - 120 GB SATA
    - 8x CD/DVD burner (DVD +/- RW) w/double layer DVD+R
    - 256 mb ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 Hypermemory
    - Intel Pro Wireless 3945

Alienware Area-51 m5550 ($1,159)
    - Core 2 Duo T5500 (1.66 Ghz / 2 mb L2 / 667 mhz FSB)
    - Alienware 15.4 WideXGA 1280x768
    - 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM @ 667 mhz
    - 60 GB SATA
    - 24x10x24 CD-RW / 8x DVD ROM
    - 128 mb ATI Mobility Radeon X1400
    - Intel Pro Wireless 3945

It seems I can pack more into the Dell for the same price, but Alienware is
known for making excellent gaming laptops.

Any opinions or experiences???

For Gaming, you'll want to invest in a better video card. The X1400 doesn't
have much horsepower and uses hypermemory (uses system memory to supplement
the ram that it does have on board).

Good point - I guess I should have specified what type of games I play most
frequently.  While I do have Doom 3 and Quake 4 on my home desktop computer,
I really wasn't planning on installing those types of games on the laptop.
The games I want to be able to play on the laptop would be:

Ultima Online: The Eighth Age
Different "online Poker" client software
Possibly the old standby "Quake 3 Arena"

Also, the laptop would be used for things like mapping/GPS (Streets & Trips
2006), watching videos/movies (of course) as well as software development (I
am a .NET programmer by trade).

Your point is well taken, since games like Doom 3 / Quake 4 are a
possibility sometime down the road for this laptop.  If you have any
suggestions on laptops with better graphics cards, that would come in at or
below the $1250 budget, I am all ears!

to be honest I don't think you are going to find a true gaming laptop for
less than 2000 dollars.
a game like doom3 will test the limits of any machine but quake should run
ok on the dell.
You can also lower the graphics on the games which will help.
It depends what games you want to run and how power hungry the game is for
