HP Pavilion ZT1135 LCD Display Problem

We bought a HP ZT1135 for our daughter when she entered college several
years ago.  With exception of the failure of the IBM TravelStar HD, it's
been very reliable.  This past weekend, the LCD display started acting
up.  Here are the symptoms:  the screen toggles from working fine, to a
white screen, then to a gray screen with a vertical raster or vertical
bars totally across the display, and then back to normal . . . and, so
on in that progression.

I connected a monitor to the DB-15 video connector, and the display is
normal using the external monitor.  I would presume this eliminates the
S3 video card from the failure possibilities.

Does the LCD display failure mode sound like the LCD power inverter
circuit is the cause of the problem?  Or, should I look elswhere?

TIA for any replies.

First on my list would be the flexible cable that connects the LCD display
to the motherboard. The connector at either end could be loose, or the
conductors in the cable may be intermittent due to flexing.
