A friend picked up a cheap HP Pavilion ze4111s. The previous owner felt
it unimportant to keep the restore/driver CDs (!?).
Another friend made him buy a new OEM copy of Windows XP Home, and then
on top of that he added all the drivers from the HP website.
That friend has now gone abroad for a few weeks, but neglected to check
the Device Manager for the dreaded exclamation mark next to "PCI Modem".
XP Home can't locate a driver for this, and the driver page on the HP
website doesn't list a modem driver.
He needs to use the installed modem to get on the internet in order to
sign up for ADSL.
From what I can gather this is a software modem, due to XP Home not
being able to identify it at all. It gives the device instance ID as:
Does anyone know where I can find a working driver for this?
Re: HP Pavilion ze4111s modem driver?
Basically you should uninstall the flawed driver and then let Windows
redetect it. After that is finished go to Windows update for HP and
check for additional modem updates for the model. I already checked on
HP's site and there is not a driver for the modem. This means that
they are relying on MS to take care of it. If XP does not redetect it
properly then the modem itself might be defective.
Win XP - Delete default modem drivers
In Windows XP, it is not necessary to enter Safe Mode to delete
Click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click the System icon and
click the Device Manager tab.
On the Device Manager tab, click the plus sign (+) next to Modems to
display the installed drivers. A red X on a modem icon indicates a
problem. Select the modem driver listed.
Press Delete on the keyboard. Click OK on any warning windows that
After the modem drivers are deleted, do one of the following:
Restart the computer in the normal mode and allow Windows to restore
the default drivers .
Reinstall the drivers using the Driver and Application Recovery CDs: HP
Notebook PCs - Installing Software and Drivers Using the Driver and
Application Recovery Discs .
Win XP - Allow Windows to restore the default drivers
The following information is helpful if the PC is restarted after
deleting the drivers. On restart, the system will detect the hardware
devices and attempt to install the required default drivers.
If prompted for the location of specific driver files, browse the
following path names until the files are found:
If prompted for information referencing Digital Signature Verification,
click Continue Anyway.
Method 7: Install the latest modem driver
If you are connected to the Internet, download and install the latest
modem driver using one of the following procedures:
Go to the HP Driver's and Downloads Web page to search for updated
modem driver software.
If there are no updated modem drivers available from HP, use
Microsoft's Windows Update feature. For more information read HP
Notebook PCs - Updating Software, Drivers and Firmware (BIOS).
Read the instructions on the downloaded pages carefully before
