I have a HP pavilion ze4610. I have had the dc power jack replaced
twice. once by HP and the 2nd time by me. Heres the deal. Laptop will
run fine and normal on AC power. If i start up onbatteryonly it will
shut down at the screen where it says start 'windows xp' or 'windows
xp backup line'. it will shut down there exactly every time on
battery. Also it will not charge a battery. it says charging but
stays at the same percentage the whole time. The battery does charge
to 100% using a friends HP laptop so i know its not thebattery. I
tried cleaning the contacts inside the laptop but didnt help. ANyone
deal with this issue? is it the onboard charging system? and where it
located on the MB?

Welcome to a common problem amongst users of HP Pavilions.  The charging
circuit has failed!!

My research has determined that the only way to resolve this is to replace
the montherboard (?) but I don't know specifically why.  What I ultimately
did was remove the battery (to make it lighter) and ONLY run it on AC.
Still works great.  Just not on battery.  I use this laptop for an
additional laptop around the house.  For any remove work I purchased an
Acer Aspire 3003 for $499 which was not much more than the cost of fixing
the HP.

Enjoy your extension cord.
