HP Compaq's Ambient Light Sensor

My HP Compaq nc8330 (running Windows XP) has an ambient light sensor
that adjusts the screen brightness depending on the ambient light.
Fn-F11 enables and disables this, but there doesn't seem to be an
indicator to show which state it is in.  Is there a way to tell,
besides waiting for the brightness to slowly wax and wane?  I don't
have Quick Launch Buttons installed.  Thanks.

Are you sure that the Q-L applet is not required for this control? If
you don't see an on-screen display of the control status, I suspect that
it is inoperative. HP is usually pretty good about having an on-screen
status display for its function key controls.  What happens if you
simply cover the sensor?  The change should be very fast.

Sorry for the tardy reply.

You are right, covering the sensor makes the screen respond quickly.  I
haven't been able to find an on-screen control/display for this ambient
light sensor.  I tried various applications in the control panel, and
hardware manager.
