My son has  a Toshiba satellite p31 which has accidently been dropped with
the dvd drive open which is now broken. To replace it do we need to remove
all the casing? The user manual makes no reference to this and we are
reluctant to remove more than necessary to get to it.  I cannot see any
scematics or
diagrams etc on toshibas site. Thanks

Re: how to replace toshiba sat pro dvd drive

Here is the procedure for removing the optical drive:

1.  Remove the hard drive.
2.  Remove one M2.5x5 screw that holds the drive in place.  It's on the
bottom of the laptop, it's approximately at the rear center of the drive
(so about 6" back from the drive door bezel, near the middle).
3.  The drive then just slides out, however if it's tight, it can be
pushed out from inside the hard drive compartment.
