installed a 40 gig Toshiba HD and replacement CD drive but cannot get the
laptop to recognize the CD and have no other way of loading an operating
system on it. The HD is recognized in bios OK. Any suggestions? The CD is a
Samsung Model: SN-124 which is the correct replacement and fits the caddy
OK, plugs in and powers up and searches the CD but I can't get access to it
or boot from it. Also it won't boot from an external USB CD drive. Is there
something in the bios that is messing things up or what?

You can figure out how to get cd drivers to work under dos, or you can
just put the whole cd onto the hard drive and install it from there.
This works in 98, never actually tried it with xp.
You can use something like laplink to load the drive over the parallel
port. Just turn it on before bed and it will be transferred by morning.
Or put the drive in your desktop and load the xp cd from there.
