I have both a T41 and T43. The T41 Motherboard seems to have gone bad
so I want to take the
Harddrive and replace the existing T43 Harddrive (It is very new no
data I need).
I took out both the T41 & T43 HD - put the T41 in the casing of the
T43 (which is slightly different from the T41) and then installed in
into the T43.
Upon booting the T43 (now with the T41 HD) - First the Powon
Password logon came on as usual - I put in my password - and then
several messages came up - basically saying by using a different HD -
there may be compatibility issues which could even destroy data. It
mentioned going into the BIOS and/or might needing firmware to insure
compatibility - but only as "pssibilities". In other words - the new
disk might work fine - but do so at your own risk.
Can anyone tell me if anything needs to be changed/modified/updated
prior to completely starting the T43 using the T41 HD? If so, any info
on exactly what needs to be done would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much...
Re: Hard Drive Compatibility
not KNOW exactly the routine IBM uses with this lockout PW you mentioned
but IF the PW is tied into an encryption method used for writing to the
disk I think you WILL have problems! The likely hood of that however is
remote because I think the message you see is put there (upon
recognition of a different HD) because HD geometries are sometimes seen
differently on different boxes. For example, when I partition a HD in my
tower with XP and stick it into the T41, upon running the HPA software
routine (to install a fresh copy of IBM's original XP) the setup BAULKS
at the HD partition tables telling me the HD geometry is goofy and MAY
cause problems with data corruption! Probably you are seeing the same
issue with the notice on the T43. To check to make SURE your data on the
T41 HD is NOT encrypted with your PW, put the HD onto another PC an see
if data there is readable in a language you understand ... most likely
So probably the real question is, are HD geometries see differently
between a T41 BIOS and T43 BIOS ... don't know, but my guess is to say
no EXCEPT the T43 BIOS MAY be looking an HPA for a T43 and seeing
something odd. If that is the case perhaps DISABLING the HPA in your
BIOS will have a beneficial effect.
Do you have a COMPLETE backup (which includes the HPA [hidden partition
area] of the HD. If so I'd risk putting the T41 HD into the T43 and go!
