I have a Gateway Solo 2500 laptop. I just recently replaced the floppy
drive which went well. All was working fine.
Then today the screen went grey upon boot up (no BIOS info before
Windows, NADA) and had two evenly spaced vertical black stripes. That
was all you would see. Several reboots yielded no results although the
Win98 bootup music was heard so it was assumed the computer was fine,
but not the screen.
My spouse had read about some more replacement parts on the web and was
unscrewing every screw found and taking out the floppy and hard drives,
and battery (which doesn't work). All this to see how it fit together.
After putting everything back together, surprisingly it works fine now!
Screen came right up. We thought we'd need a new screen but it seems
something was loose.
Could a faulty connection with the drives or inoperable battery cause
the screen to go grey? Should we just take the battery out?
