Nothing at all. No lights anything.

User reported it made a funny popping sound before dying. Any ideas?

Well start unplugging things like the HD, CD/DVD drive, memory, etc. and to
see if one device failed and draws too much power which the safety circuits
prevents the laptop from firing up. Checking the AC adapter (under load) is
another thing. If all of the above passes, it is down to the motherboard
most likely.

Both symptoms (pop before dying and no action thereafter)
typify a "blown" power supply.   This is a plug-in module which
converts mains AC to a variety of DC voltages to drive the
various components.   Power supplies are cheap and
easily replaced -- as seems needed in 20 per cent of PCs
in the first five years of use.
