Anybody tell me how to open the unit up to replace the power socket. Live in
a remote area and it would be very expensive in mail costs to send to repair

A quick search for the service manual turns up nothing.

A connector repair is one of the more difficult repair operations. As
it almost always involves  completely disassembling the unit. And then
de-soldering the connector.

After removing the battery, and any drives that come out easily:

You start by removing the keyboard.  There may be screws on the
bottom, or there is a strip above the keyboard you can pry off.

After that, it's keep removing parts.

For a first timer, this may be a weekend project. For an expert, at
least an hour or 2.

I agree.
This type of repair is trivial the SECOND time you do it.
For me, the FIRST time usually results in busted snap tabs,
extra screws etc.
Take careful notes on which parts came out in what order.
The piece that's left over when you're "done" is always
the one that requires complete re-disassembly to put in.

Return address is VALID!
