Foreign Laptops?

Hi All,

I am looking to get a new laptop, and it seems like Japan has a lot of
better laptop models that we have in the States (the most recent
Panasonic Y2 looks pretty sweet).  I have found a few places where I
can get "Americanized" versions of the laptops, like Dynamism and
Kemplar.  Does anyone have any experience with buying foreign model
laptops like this? If so, any problems or annoyances that I might
expect to see?

Re: Foreign Laptops?

Panasonic laptop have a good reputation for performance specially their
ruggedized versions.

Well Fujitsu is another one. I know a friend who bought a unit that was
marked Made in Japan and indeed has good reliable performance and had
never a problem since it was bought two years ago.

Well if you happen to obtain a unit that has japanese script  in terms
of accompanying literature  and labelling of parts (instead of English)
then you will be in trouble<grin>..

Mostly what you'll find is that Japan doesn't send their smallest
models to the US because we've shown a strong preference for
monster-screens at the expense of weight. Even IBM has skipped us for
some lightweight models.
As for companies, I've bought from Dynamism a couple of times
without a hitch. Service was good, though their prices are up there.
my main gripes were always the keyboards - even after re-mapping,
they're always a bit "off."
