Re: factory refurbished laptop thoughts
I find them generally more reliable out of the box since they have been
supposedly fully checked out by a factory tech. And a lot of electronic
devices like computers can fail after a burn in period which many that
are sold as new don't get tested passed this point very much. Plus
refurbished usually gets any upgrade mods that earlier production runs
that could be problematic in the future.
That being said, there could be some problems with some refurbished
models. Like some models can have reliability problems (aka lemon
models). And sometimes this isn't always addressed in refurbished
models. And many of these, the manufacture will usually offer no
warrantee or support for them at all. But the buyer will generally not
know this before purchasing.
For example, places like Tiger Direct has been known to sell you one of
these without disclosing this information. And they will falsely state
that say Dell or HP handles the warrantee. And if you have problems, the
manufacture says Tiger Direct is responsible for the warrantee and Tiger
Direct will tell you that it is the manufacture's responsibilities. So
you get nowhere.
While this sounds bad, this isn't always the case. There are also plenty
of horror stories of people buying brand new computers and having
endless problems with them. And some complain that it spends more time
in the shop than being with them. Luckily this isn't the norm.
Also most refurbished computers have a much shorter warrantee than new.
Only 90 days seems to be the norm for most of them. But then again, they
cost far cheaper than new and if you factor in the extended coverage
charge, that pretty much explains the difference. All and all, I do like
factory refurbished. As most of the time the experience is really great
at a great price.
