With individuals and families possessing an ever-greater number of
devices using rechargeable batteries, manufacturers are helping
consumers cut down on clutter by introducing new charger units that can
charge dedicated batteries from various products or manufacturers.

"We will be launching some new digital camera and camcorder chargers
that have interchangeable plates to fit many different dedicated format
batteries," said Bob Roth, sales and marketing VP for San Diego-based
North American Battery (NABC). "There will be one charger for
camcorders and one for digital cameras, and both will be sold under our
Ultralast brand. With one SKU, we can cover over 90 percent of each

Also being introduced by NABC are rechargeable batteries for the
growing categories of iPod/MP3 players, PlayStation Portable, PDAs,
smartphones and portable DVD players, among other products.

As the exclusive licensee for Duracell camcorder, digital camera and
laptop batteries, as well as laptop adapters, Battery-Biz is launching
two Duracell Universal laptop adapters that work with most models from
Acer, Apple, Compaq/HP, Dell, Gateway, IBM, Sony, Toshiba and more.
Also, by using their computer's USB port, consumers can simultaneously
power and recharge the battery of their notebook and an additional
portable device such as iPod, digital camera, PDA or cellphone.

"One of our new models is the Duracell Universal 130-watt AC/DC
adapter, which can be used in the air, in a car or in the home or
office. It has a suggested retail of $129.99," said Jessie Taxe,
marketing director at Newbury Park, Calif-based Battery-Biz. "The
second model is the Duracell Universal 90-watt DC adapter for use in a
car, plane, boat or RV. It sells for a suggested $99.99."

Lenmar also is offering chargers with adapter plates that enable users
to charge a variety of batteries for digital cameras, cellphones, PDAs,
camcorders and other devices. The recently introduced Mach 1 Fusion
USB, for example, has integrated support for both lithium-ion and
nickel metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries, plus a built-in USB power port
and AC and DC cables.

In addition, Edison, N.J.-headquartered Sakar International is rolling
out the CH-3450 series of 10 Universal Travel Chargers for digital
cameras from Canon, Fuji, JVC, Kodak, Minolta, Nikon, Olympus,
Panasonic, Samsung and Sony. Each model is sold with extra adapter
plates to fit all digital camera batteries from the designated
manufacturer. The rapid chargers automatically detect battery voltage
and include an LED charging indicator.

Sakar also is introducing rechargeable replacement batteries for
digital cameras including models from Panasonic, Sony and Nikon, as
well as a Rapid Car Charger that comes with two 2000mAh NiMH AA

I wonder how they are planning on getting around Dell's proprietary
charger interface?  Some aftermarket supplies will operate Dell
laptops, but the batteries will not charge.
