One of the two 128MB SODIMM PC100 chips on my Dell Inspiron 3800 blew.
Initially, the laptop crashed, rebooted and detected 192MB of RAM.
After I opened the laptop and swapped the RAM modules positions, it
went down to 128MB.

Then I plugged in a 64MB chip in place of the faulty 128MB chip hoping
to get 192MB but that doesn't work. The laptop BIOS recognises only
128MB. Does anyone know why I can't use a 128MB and a 64MB together?

I also noticed that the BIOS says the processor speed is 500MHz while
the processor is a P-III 650MHz.

Get Crucial brand RAM(for that model) and they will show up.
Only check the CPU speed while plugged in the wall, other readings may
be stepped down speeds for extra battery life.
