This indicated that my cd drive was reading data at abetween 15x and
After a short period of very high vibrations in the drive, the speed
will now not rise above 5.5x.
Is there any way I can run some diagnostics to test the maximum speed
that the drive will run at? I have tried the installed Dell diagnostics
but this did not appear to me to confirm whether there was a speed

Just a shot in the dark.
There is an option in SOME Dell laptop BIOS that sets the drive speed as
"optimum" (as distinct from "flat-chat"). The note adjacent to the setting
explains that this allows dodgy/out_of_balance discs to be read without trauma
by lowering the speed to a suitable figure. I'm not sure if this reduced speed
"sticks" in any way or whether it retries at full speed on every disc change.
