A friend of mine has a Sony laptop, VAIO PCG-GRT250, the dvd burner has
gone out,
It is a CRX830E.

Does he have to replace it with a CRX830E?, or is there another brand
that is interchangeable with this model.
This is the second CRX830E that has gone out on him.

Thanks in Advance,

Re: CRX830E Replacement

It may be possible to use a different drive, but the issues are
mechanical rather than electrical and the only way to evaluate them is
by actually trying to do it.  Electrically, the drives are pretty
standardized, and even the location of the connector is generally
standard, but many laptops use custom brackets or connector
adapters/caddies to mount the drives, and the front bezels are NOT
standard at all (you may end up with an installation that would be
perfect if the drive tray would only close.  Some people who don't care
about appearance fix such problems with an X-Acto knife or grinding tool).
