Don't apply too much. You only require enough to fill any potential air gap
between the CPU and the heatsink. That means a small blob will do the job.
Enough so that it just oozes out all round.
Also note that most of the faster processors now specify that the only
compound to be used is the newer phase change thermal compounds. As this
looks not unlike those glue sticks, beware that you don't end up with your
CPU stuck to your heatsink and your photos falling out of your album (but at
least they are cool!).
