I am inquiring about a Compaq Aero Contura 4/33 laptop/notebook. For
those of you who recall, it is a 486 33-mhz laptop.  I am inquiring to
see if there is a way to increase the brightness (beyond that of the
contrast/brightness controls on the keyboard).  The CCFL can be
replaced as I'm well aware. Is there anything in the circuitry of the
Inverter or display drive that could be modified to increase
brightness further?

Thanks in advance.

Well not really. Your two chooses are:

1) Use an external monitor

2) Replace the fluorescent lamp.

Theoretically you could redesign the inverter to output higher high
voltage. But that in parts alone would cost more than a lamp itself
(plus a little dangerous, as too much current and poof!). Those lamps
lifespan is good for about 25,000 to 50,000 hours (as they get too
dark). I think it is time to replace it or use an external monitor.

I had an Aero years ago.  Display was passive matrix, and thus no where near
as bright and contrasty as the active matrix displays.
Even if you could make it brighter, it would still have that dull washed out

I went from the Aero to the Toshiba Portege mostly just to get the better
