I have a year-old R3240US, which uses the 3200+ AMD 64.  The system
runs like a blast furnace when I run any game on it.

Is there a lower-powered version of the processor that can replace the
current one?   Certainly some of the newer AMD chips use less power,
but I'm not sure what's compatable.

Post this to alt.sys.pc-clone.compaq where there are some experts in the
peculiarities of Compaq designs.  Unless you can find one of this series
that uses the low voltage CPU, it is unlikely that the board design will
support it and there is no guarantee that your model's board is
compatible. If you can identify one with the low voltage CPU, it might
be possible to do a complete board replacement from eBay.

BTW, how hot is "blast furnace"?  AMD CPUs do run hotter than Intel's.
