my cd drive spins up randomly even when there is no disc in it.
This is really annoying as it causes the laptop to freeze up
for several seconds. Seems too happen when I move the laptop
I guess this is a hardware problem ?
Had a quick look on web but not found much about replacing
laptop cd drives (it's a fujitsu lifebook C series)
Is it possible to get and fit a cd drive myself like I would
with a desktop?
If not I just want to disable the drive to stop it spinning up
every few minutes! I have an external drive I can use so I can live with
it permanently disabled.
Can I do this via windows XP ?
Presumably there is some kind of mechanical trigger, e.g. when you
insert a disc the drive senses it and spins up. So maybe I can't
disable it in windows/BIOS ?
Re: cd drive spin up problem
I think Xp is looking for files/discs that were once present in the drive.
Some programs store file paths and check those paths on a regular basis.
Try to find out (search the registry if neccesary) what program might
causing this behaviour (Windows indexing service, virus scan, backup
software, game, media player software, cd burner software, ...)
