cable or LCD

 I have an Acer 4710z.
The display shows only black/dark lines and a pale gray colour, no
image. The inverter is working fine, since with the signal cable
unplugged the screen lights up white (no lines). On plugging the
signal cable the lines return. I am not sure if it is the cable or the
LCD to blame.

Any idea?

I don't think there is an easy way to tell without expensive equipment.
Although before you go further, I would definitely try an external
monitor and make sure that looks good before you proceed.

Re: cable or LCD

There is no easy way to tell other than by substitution:

1.  Try the cable in another laptop
2.  Try another cable in this laptop
3.  Try the LCD in another laptop
4.  Try another LCD in this laptop

I do presume that an external monitor works ok?

If the cable is individual wires, you may be able to examine it enough
to see if it's the problem, or possibly even fix it.

Cheapest solution may be to buy another cable on E-Bay. wrote:

Re: cable or LCD

Thanks for all suggestions. It was the screen. I tried out a 14"
screen in place of the 14.1", and the display was fine, am using the
14" instead of the 14.1.
