capable of handling vista. I don't do games.
2GB Ram minimum,
15" plus screen,
ideally a 3 year worldwide collect and return warranty.
Currently I am only aware of Higrade offering such a warranty (on Ultinote).
My current laptop was from them and is 5 years old and going well. However
it is an Asus and they no longer us Asus bases so I don't know if their
current range is as good.
Mesh do Asus but not such a good warranty.
Rock has a reasonable warranty (3 years Europe collect and return) (on e.g.

Asus still offer a standard 2-year worldwide warranty with pick-up and
return for their laptops. Yet this does not mean that they have a service
centre in all countries, but far better than most other service packages
that are limited to a country or a continent like Europe. Have a look at
