Who, besides Dell, still makes laptops with the DB9 serial port connection?
I have too many gadgets (GPS, PDA, micro-controller) that connect via the
serial port and used to use the DB9 connector almost daily in my last job.

Sir, if I was building a weapon of mass destruction,
you wouldn't be able to find it.

Not really. USB to serial only works "sometimes" (maybe half the time).
If the program using the serial port expects direct access to the UART
registers, it will fail, and many programs expect exactly that.

A better alternative is a PC card serial port, which is a "real" serial
port with "real" registers. Compatibility (at least with the serial
port device and it's software) is nearly perfect, but such cards are
uncommon and expensive when and if you can find them.

I'd be using Hyperterm or Putty for some of the connections, but also
G7toWin for the GPS, and the Palm desktop to sync our old PDA. And I think
my wife still has a Crosspad that uses the serial port.

Many of the better USB to RS232 adaptor drivers provide virtual registers
that do work - most of the time. However, anecdotal evidence does suggest
that compatibilty varies considerably.

A quick google gives:

... and you will note, Barry, that in the light of previous discussions,
that even they call them PCMCIA cards.

But they are pricey though at around $100.
