I would guess that it is a graphics card/driver/TV combination problem. There
is still work to be done by TV manufacturers & graphics card manufacturers in
getting PCs & TVs to play nicely together most of the time.

What is the native resolution of the TV? What is the graphics card & what
version of graphics driver?

Hi Nigel,

Thanks for your reply - apologies for the delay in getting back to you. I
think you're pretty much spot on when you talk about graphics cards and
drivers. However, I don't think the TV is a problem - it works fine when the
PC is running XP at all refresh rates and it works fine in Vista at 60hz and
24hz - just not the 50hz I need.

The graphics card is integrated into the Nvidia Geforce 8200 motherboard
chipset. I've tried all the nvidia drivers starting with 171.37 to the latest
175.19 and everything in between (including betas).

The native resolution of the TV is 1360 x 768 but, as the TV's EDID only
lists this at a 60Hz refresh rate, I have to use the standard consumer video
resolutions of 720p and 1080p, where I can access 50hz refresh rates. This
only affects video scaling though and won't affect the problem of
intermittent stutter I am seeing.

Kind regards,

Pete

With the custom resolution option in the 175.19 drivers you should be able
to specify 1366 or 1360 x768 at 50Hz.

Probably the TV won't work at that refresh rate with that resolution.
Many(most? all?) LCD TVs will only work at either 1360 x 768 @60Hz or 1280 x
720 @50Hz. I have spent a long time trying to persuade our TV otherwise:-)

i have since found that if i play the same file that was stuttering by use
media player instead of Media centre i dont get the stutter at all. as Media
player doesnt have a fast forward or skip on the menu it makes it a bit
difficult to skip the adverts on the recorded stuff but i have found a
workaround by using my mx logitech mouse forward/back button but
unfortunately it skips 3.30min every time which is a bit long most times.
will have to look where i can change this, possibly in the registry? i still
use media centre to record and set up future recordings and recording
settings.
