Desktop search doesn't seem to index file names. Is this the case? If so,
why not? I often need to find a file with where I remember part of the
name. Desktop search is way faster than Explorer search.

Desktop search indeed index filenames, but if you want to search all the
filenames on your Hard disk, you should index it. Otherwise by default only
your "My Documents and Email" are indexed and you see files from this
location only.
( Use query like filename: msn)
