If these are in the proprietary Apple format (not just MP3's), Media =
Center doesn't know what to do with them.

Because if you downloaded music from iTunes then it's in a format that
can only be used in iTunes and on an iPod.

It's not compatible with Media Centre or anything else as far as I
know.

The default filetype for Itunes is .aac, unless you go into Advanced: Ripping
and set it to MP3 BEFORE your rip your music.

This is a fault of Microsoft and Media Center. If you originally ripped your
music with iTunes, then it is in the AAC format. iTunes uses ISO compliant
MPEG-4 AAC, so theres absolutely no reason for Media Center not to support
it. It's an open, international standard. Theres no reason for Microsoft not
to support it, other than they want to lock you into the Windows Media Format
and lock you into Windows entirely.
