A FEW guess's come to mind.

1. CHECK the FAN.. make sure it is working correctly. it's on top of the CPU
on that model. ( have repaired about 200 - T23's lol ) .. if it's NOT
working. it may just be Overheating and shutting down.

2. Try FULLY charging the battery, then running it ONLY OFF BATTERY . see if
it dies as quickly or not at all? when the Laptop is not running on AC it
uses power saving techniques.. and may prevent it from overheating as
quickly etc..

3. The battery having to be removed to boot. I would suggest REMOVING THE
BATTERY and trying the Laptop WITH OUT the battery just on AC.. and see if
that causes any issues?

4. last resort. and probably not the issue. but. just something to kill time
with.. REIMAGE the laptop. wipe it out and reinstall OS. I can see your OS
causing the system to lockup and or shutdown, but the removal of the battery
part. well that shouldn't have anything to do with software..?? ..

Good Luck

ok will give those a check and reply back. i thought it might of been
overheating but the fan seems to be working ok. have you seen this
before in a t-23? oh thanks so much

Is there any difference in how long you have run it before
this happens?

It has come to light that some people think they have a major
problem with their Thinkpad when it has simply gone into
hibernation after a precise time interval of just sitting
there.

I thought that at first also Lars.. BUT.. disguarded it when he said he
needed to REMOVE the battery to get it to power on.. That squashed the idea
of hibernation mode . Hibernation mode should not make you have to remove
your battery.. ..

I've seen this issue happen quite a few times.. But his seems to happen more
than the norm. I use to see it quite frequeantly on the Dell CPxJ
Lattitudes.. and on a few T23's .. But NOT like his is.. ??
