OK, something I saw in another thread (that I thought was unrelated!)
triggered an idea. I popped out my SD card and tried again, and it synced
fine. I put the card back in and things are still fine. I don't have any
idea what's going on, but if somebody else has a similar problem this is a
good thing to try.
The outstanding question is, does this mean my SD card is going bad??
