On your desktop, click, "My Computer->View System
Information->Hardware->Device Manager->Disk drives"
... Should list all the physical devices (hard drives) on the Computer that
it SEES
You can right click "Properties->Volumes->Populate" for each drive
... to determine the logical Volume associations.
Start HERE ... and report your results .... I still have no idea about the
noises you are hearing.

I have seen drives that click as you describe if they are not getting enough
power to properly spin up the drive. They can still show up as a new device
but with the drive not actually spinning at full speed the interface can not
figure out what to do with it.
Does your USB drive get it's power from the USB port or from an external
transformer?
A partially defective USB cable can also cause the same problem as a weak
USB port or transformer not providing enough power
Considering the number of laptops that the unit has failed to work on so far
I would suspect
the cable or USB case as being defective, or the drive itself as a last
resort.
You may have luck recovering the data if you transfer your drive to a
different external USB case, but doing this might void any warranty you
might have on the existing drive/case.
